The current battery size options for a Rivian R1S range from 105 kWh to 135 kWh, with the production of a third 180 kWh option on the horizon. By the EPA’s estimates, the 2022 Rivian R1S could get up to 316 miles of range.
To the delight of many customers who have been waiting in pre-order purgatory, the first Rivian R1S vehicles made their way out for delivery this year and are gradually starting to hit the roads. If you’re considering ordering a model yourself, you’re probably wondering about its battery specs.

The current battery size options for the 2022 Rivian R1S range from 105 kWh to 135 kWh, depending on which option you pick. The 2022 R1S offers two different battery options: a standard pack or a large pack.
The Standard R1S battery pack has a 105 kWh size and a range of about 260 miles, according to Rivian, with an official estimate from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pending. The R1S’s Large battery pack option has 135 kWh and an EPA-estimated range of up to 316 miles.
If you prefer the R1S’s Quad-Motor all-wheel drive option, you’ll need to choose the Large battery pack to adequately power your vehicle.
For the Rivian R1S, a third Max battery pack option is expected on the horizon, which would have a 180 kWh capacity, but production for these has so far been delayed
until 2023. New Rivians also come with a limited warranty
that includes battery pack coverage for 8 years or 175,000 miles—whichever comes first. Rivian R1S battery, range, and charging specs
For now, only the Large battery pack option for the Rivian R1S has an EPA-estimated range. The agency’s estimate for the Standard battery range is still pending.
That said, it helps to remember that range estimates are just that—estimates. How long your battery actually lasts between charges might vary somewhat under real-world conditions.
Additionally, how long it takes to recharge your R1S will depend on which charging method you use. Recharging at 240V would typically look like an at-home or workplace charging setup where there is access to a 240V outlet (as opposed to a standard household 120V outlet).
That 240V charging time would generally be faster than charging from a standard outlet, while a public direct current (DC) fast charging station could potentially give you 100-200 miles of range in just half an hour, by U.S. Department of Energy estimates.
The table below shows how EPA ratings for battery capacity, range, and charging times look for the R1S so far.

How does the R1S’s battery measure up to the competition?
The 2022 R1S SUV is one of the few SUV EVs on the market that offers a third row of seating, making it a tempting option for drivers who want to go all-electric but don’t want to sacrifice on space. It's solid handling, towing capacity, and performance specs also make it a good candidate for off-road adventures.
But with more EVs making their way onto the scene, how does the R1S’s battery potential compare? To find out, take a look at the table below:

With a couple of exceptions on this list, the 2022 Rivian R1S’s maximum range potential outcompetes many other electric SUVs and trucks. Still, other model ranges do come close—and at the moment, are probably easier to get your hands on.
