How big is a Ford Explorer battery?
Let’s start off with some numbers. For the eight trim levels available for the 2022 Ford Explorer, there are three different engine types available—one of which is a hybrid engine. However, not every engine type is available for every trim level. This means some trim levels use AGM batteries (a kind used in gasoline-only vehicles) to power the electronic components of the vehicle, while others use hybrid batteries to help power the engine.

First, let’s look at the gasoline trim levels with H6 batteries. If you’re not familiar with car battery types, this classification probably doesn’t mean a whole lot to you, but we’ll help get you acquainted with it. H6 is one of nine battery group sizes commonly found in passenger vehicles. H6 batteries, also known as Group 48 batteries, measure 12 1/16 by 6 ⅞ by 7 9/16 inches and weigh approximately 55 lbs.
These kinds of batteries have C20 rates of about 72 Ah, rate 800 in cold cranking amps, and generally last between three and five years.
Hybrid batteries
are a whole different beast. Unlike regular car batteries, hybrid batteries are able to be recharged and help the vehicle consume less fuel. The Limited
and Platinum
trims of the Ford Explorer are available to purchase as hybrid models (in fact, hybrid is the default for the Platinum trim) equipped with 1.5 kWh batteries that typically have between 20 and 40 miles of range. And, if you purchase a hybrid Explorer, your battery will come backed with an 8-year/100,000 battery warranty.
