2020 Honda CR-V engine oil capacity

We know what you’re wondering: how much oil does my 2020 Honda CR-V hold?
We’re glad you asked.
The turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that comes standard can hold up to 3.4 quarts of oil, or 3.2 liters. Keep in mind the engine’s displacement is not the same as the engine oil capacity when you look at these numbers.
Oil capacity is the amount of oil you need for an oil change. Displacement (1.5 liters in this case) refers to the engine’s cylinders’ volume—totally different.

What kind of oil does a 2020 Honda CR-V need?

If you’re doing an oil change yourself, you need oil. (Duh.)
Let’s talk about what kind you need since using the right type is critical. Honda recommends Honda Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20, but any 0W-20 grade oil will do.
Confused as to what the numbers mean? Let’s discuss.
The numbers represent the oil’s viscosity, or thickness. The W stands for winter. So, the zero implies this oil is pretty thin, which tells us it will perform well in the winter. The 20 means it’s going to get a little thicker when the weather warms up but not much.
Thus, the lower the first number, the better it will perform in the winter. Since Honda recommends 0W-20, rest assured it’s the right oil to put in your vehicle.
Here are some more thoughts on what type of oil to use:
  • The genuine thing: If you want to follow what Honda says, use the oil
    they recommend
    .
  • The high-mileage Honda: If you’re putting a lot of miles on your CR-V, go with a
    10W-40 synthetic blend
    .
  • The quality control rec: If for whatever reason, you have to wait longer between oil changes, this
    high-quality synthetic blend
    is perfect.

How often to change the oil on a 2020 Honda CR-V

Now it’s time to
change your oil
, right? Maybe.
A Honda regular
car maintenance schedule
will recommend changing your oil every 7,500 miles or so if you use their recommended full-synthetic oil. If you decide to use conventional oil instead, you’ll need to change your oil more frequently.
But to really be sure you’re changing your oil at the right time, check your oil level on your own—every time you fill up at the gas station or every other month will do.
If your oil needs to be changed, here are some obvious signs:
  • It looks dark brown or dark black. (On the flip side, clean oil is lighter and resembles a cup of weak tea.)
  • The oil looks or
    feels gritty.
  • You hear strange or loud engine noises.
  • You smell burning or
    smoke from the engine
    .
  • The vehicle begins to perform differently.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Okay, if in fact, it’s time to change your oil, here’s what to do. Gather a socket wrench, drain pan, and filter wrench. You also need a replacement filter and 3.4 quarts of Honda Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20.
Before you begin the oil change, run the engine and let it warm up. Then, turn off the engine and open the hood.
After that, follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil cap
  • Get below the engine and take off the oil drain bolt and washer from the engine, then drain the old oil into the pan
  • Remove the used filter while the oil drains
  • Put on a new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
By using a dipstick, you can make sure your oil levels are sufficient. Once complete, turn on the car and let it run to see if there are any leaks. If you did it the right way,
oil pressure light on your dashboard
should turn off.
The last step is to pour the old oil into a tightly sealed container and recycle it locally. Never throw it in the trash.
