No matter what trim you drive, your 2017 Nissan Titan has an engine oil capacity of 6.9 quarts or 6.5 liters.

When selecting from the 2017 Titan lineup you’ll have your pick between the S,

, SL, PRO-4X, and Platinum Reserve. All of them have a few things in common, the most important being a 5.6-liter V8 engine paired with a 6.9-liter engine oil tank.

This might sound confusing, but there’s a pretty distinct difference between that 5.6-liter number and the 6.9-liter number. The 5.6 used to describe the engine represents the amount of room taken up by the engine—also known as its displacement. The 6.9 quarts, however, represents the amount of oil needed for an oil change in a 2017 Nissan Titan.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Nissan Sentra need?

When you walk down the aisles of your local automotive store, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options. To make it easier, Nissan has included a recommendation for engine oil right there in the Titan manual. According to the manufacturer, your 2017 Titan is best paired with Genuine Nissan Motor Oil 0W-20 full synthetic.

These letters and numbers have a unique purpose: to tell you the viscosity of the oil at certain temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil. The first number—in this case, 0—represents the thickness of the oil at 0°F. That cold temperature is indicated by the “W” next to it, which stands for winter. The second number—20—represents the oil viscosity in temperature of up to 212°F.

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Nissan Titan

In general, it’s a good idea to change the oil on a 2017 Nissan Titan every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. This depends on how often you drive, though.

If you aren’t on the road very often, it may take you a while to hit the 3,000-mile mark. In that case, you can stick by the rule of changing your oil once every six months.

The only exception is if you are using full synthetic oil, in which case you can usually wait to change it until you hit 7,500 miles.

If you’re not exactly sure how long it's been since your last oil change, or you suspect you may be due for one sooner rather than later, you can check your oil to get a better idea of when yours should be changed. If you notice any of the following, it's time to say out with the old, and in with the new:

Dark brown or black oil

Oil light on dashboard is illuminated

Motor oil that is coarse or gritty

Loud or odd noises from engine

Smells like smoke or burning

How to change your oil and oil filter

When it does come time to change your oil, you may decide to take it to a mechanic, who can usually complete the service in 20 to 45 minutes. If you have a few tools at home though, it can be a fairly simple DIY.

To change your oil at home, you’ll need:

A socket wrench

A drain pan

A filter wrench a replacement filter

6.9 quarts of full synthetic 0W-20 engine oil.

Once you have all of your tools, turn on the engine and let the car run for a while, until it warms up—usually about five minutes.

Then, open the hood and follow the following steps:

Take off the oil fill cap.

Remove the oil drain bolt and washer under the engine.

Drain the old oil into the drain pan.

Remove your old oil filter and install the new one.

Use a new washer to replace the oil drain bolt.

Refill the engine with the new oil.

Don’t forget to replace the fill cap.

After you’re done, turn the car back on for about 30 seconds, so the new oil can fill the filter. You may also want to let it run for a few more minutes to make sure there aren’t any leaks!

And when it comes time to dispose of that old oil, be careful. Putting it on the ground or down a drain, or even in a trash bin, can lead to environmental contamination. Instead, put it in a sealed container and take it to a recycling center near you.
