What do I do if I get a flat tire on the highway?

My car is constantly breaking down on me. I’m taking a big road trip this weekend and am trying to prepare for the worst-case scenarios. What do I do if I get a flat tire on the freeway?

We’re sorry to hear your car is acting up on you! We’ll make sure you’re prepared for your trip. If you get a flat tire on the highway, you should let your car slow down gradually and roll toward the shoulder of the road or an exit. Once stopped, turn on your emergency flashers, and stand far away from the vehicle while you wait for help to arrive.
Here’s more on that.
  • If your tire blows out on the highway, do not slam on your brakes. Let your car slow down gradually by taking your foot off the gas.
  • Let your car roll toward the shoulder of the road or toward an exit. Do not stop in the middle of traffic.
  • Once the car is stopped turn on your emergency flashers and
    call for assistance
    .
You can also
fix the tire yourself
if you know how.
Since your car’s been acting funny, make sure it’s covered with the right
car insurance
policy.
