2016 Ford F150 engine oil capacity

Depending on your engine size, you will need a different amount of oil. Keep in mind that all of these engines can take either SAE 5W-20 or SAE 5W-30 fully synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil.
Engine size
Ford F150 engine oil capacity
3.5L V6 (most common engine size)
6.3 quarts
5.0L V8
7.7 quarts
3.5L & 2.7L Ecoboost
6 quarts; Ford recommends 5W-30 for these engines
When it comes to the grade recommended by Ford for the F150, 5W-20, the first number (5) refers to the viscosity (thickness) of the oil at colder temperatures, such as when you start your truck. The second number (20) is the oil’s viscosity at typical operating temperatures, usually 212 degrees.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Ford F150 need?

Now that you’ve determined your 2016 Ford F150’s oil capacity and oil weight and grade, you need to decide between conventional or synthetic motor oil
While the cheaper prices for conventional oil may be tempting, keep in mind that Ford recommends a synthetic blend.
Why go with synthetic oil? Synthetics typically have a higher-quality oil base, which means you can go longer between oil changes. However, the fact that it is higher-quality means it is also better for your engine.
Now you’ll need to determine which brand of oil. Thankfully, there are a lot of reliable ones from which to choose.
Ford recommends a
Motorcraftoil and filter
because Motorcraft is owned and operated by Ford. The argument is that their engineers know Ford engines best. However, there are equally good options out there, including the ones listed below.
Reminder: Be sure to change your F150’s oil filter when you change your oil. Expect to pay about $20 for a good quality filter.

How often to change oil on a 2016 Ford F150

Old school advice was to change your oil every 3,500 to 5,000 miles, but that was with conventional oil.Assuming you are going to put in synthetic oil, you can go longer—up to 7,500-10,000 miles
But if you have an F150 with high mileage (over 75,000+ miles) or you regularly tow, you may want to baby your engine a bit more. Changing your oil every 5,000 miles makes more sense than trying to max out at 10,000 miles.
Between oil changes, check your oil levels and the appearance of your oil by pulling out the dipstick and inspecting the oil. If you see any of these issues, they indicate that your F150 needs attention, and at the very least, an oil change:
  • Black or dark brown oil
  • Gritty feeling or coarse oil
  • A burning smell
  • Strange engine noises

How to change your oil and oil filter

Many F150 owners learn to change their oil themselves as it’s a good way to save a bit of money. If you’ve decided to give it a try, assemble the following items:
  • Drain pan (for used oil) and paper towels and cardboard to protect your garage floor from used oil
  • A funnel to pour in new oil
  • Depending upon your engine size, 6 to 8 quarts of SAE 5W-20 synthetic or synthetic blend oil
  • A 2016 Ford F150 oil filter with new washer
  • A ratchet for unscrewing the drain plug
  • New washer for re-installing the drain plug
  • If you don’t have a lift kit on your truck and can’t slide under the truck very well, use a Jack stand (or Rhino ramps)
  • Wheel chocks to secure your F150 and keep it from rolling
Be sure that your F150 is parked in a level area. Let the engine run for approximately 5 minutes (unless the engine is already warm). This ensures that the used oil will drain smoothly.
Next, be sure to turn off the engine and place your truck in park, with the emergency brake on.
  • If needed, jack up the front of your F150. Be sure that it is resting securely on jack stands.
  • Place your oil collection bucket underneath the drain bolt. Then unscrew the bolt with the ratchet. The oil should easily drain out into the bucket.
  • After the old oil has fully drained out, remove the bucket of used oil and set it safely to the side of the truck.
  • Then, replace the drain bolt using a new crush washer. Tighten to the torque spec
  • Next, remove the old oil filter
  • Install the new filter and washer
  • Lower the truck from the jack stands.
  • Now, using the funnel, pour in the new oil.
  • Replace the oil fill cap.
Start your engine and let it run for a few minutes, then turn it off and check for leaks underneath the truck. Also, using the dipstick, re-check your oil level. If needed, add a bit more oil.
The final step is disposing of your used motor oil properly. Don’t put it out in the regular trash or dump it out on the ground. Instead, take it to a recycling center or to a store that sells oil. Most states require car part retailers to accept used motor oil for recycling.

Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance

Insurance for an F150 can be expensive. This is one reason why learning to do routine maintenance like oil changes yourself makes a lot of sense. You can save some money while also preventing larger headaches.
