How to measure your Ford Explorer’s bolt pattern
If you are a do-it-yourselfer who likes to double-check things, it’s pretty easy to measure the bolt pattern. First, get a ruler or tape measure, then you can begin.
Because your Explorer has an uneven number of bolts, you can’t just measure straight across the wheel, which puts you in the middle of two bolts. Instead, pick a bolt on one side of the wheel, then choose the nearest bolt across from it on the other side (right or left, it doesn’t matter).
Once you have those two bolts matched, use the ruler to measure from the outside of one lug hole to the center of the opposite bolt—which gives you the diameter. The diameter is added to the number of bolts to create the bolt pattern, the number of bolts x the diameter of the circle they form. For your 2002 Ford Explorer, this is 5x4.5.
