What are the consequences of not wearing a seatbelt?

Why is it illegal to not wear a seatbelt? It doesn’t seem like it would do very much to help you if you got into an accident, and it could even keep you trapped in the car. What consequences would I face if I didn’t wear one?

Seatbelts keep you safe in a number of ways, which is why most state laws include seat belt mandates of one kind or another. The only state without any mandatory seatbelt laws is
New Hampshire
. The legal consequences of not wearing a seatbelt usually come in the form of a small fine, typically about $25.
If you’re in an accident without a seatbelt, however, the consequences could be much more severe. If you’re thrown forward into the opening airbag of the dashboard, the impact could cause severe injury or even death. A seatbelt can also prevent you from being thrown from the vehicle in the event of a crash, which could easily save your life.
Getting caught without a seatbelt can also raise your insurance rates. Luckily, the
