The 2022 Porsche 718 offers minimal improvements on previous models, such as two new exterior paint colors and leather accessories. However, the brand-new top-tier trim level (the 718 GT4 RS) is definitely worth your consideration.
Porsche is synonymous with power and style. The 718 Cayman and Boxster have undergone several evolutions in the last decade, but none quite as significant as the 2017 engine swap. In fact, there are no major differences between the 2021 and 2022 Porsche 718.
So should you snag a 718 now, or wait for the new redesign in 2025?

No, neither the Boxster nor Cayman 2022 Porsche 718 was redesigned—although naturally, the 2022 models are more expensive than previous model years.
There are only minor changes in the 2022 model of the Porsche 718, and they’re all optional.
To start, there are two new paint colors (Frozen Berry and Shark Blue Metallic). Expanded personalization options include color-matched key fobs. You can also get leather-covered floor mats and key pouches.
On top of the base trim, there are five more trim levels for the 718 Cayman: 718 Cayman T, 718 Cayman S, Cayman GTS 4.0, 718 Cayman GT4, and 718 Cayman GT4 RS (read more about this epic new option in the next section).
Here are some of the standard features of the 2022 Porsche 718:
- 300-hp turbocharger 2.0L flat-four engine
- Rear-wheel drive
- Six-speed manual transmission
- Up to 21 city mpg, up to 27 highway mpg
- Front trunk and rear cargo area
- 7-inch infotainment touchscreen
- Eight-speaker audio system
Every Porsche 718 has Apple CarPlay compatibility, but Android Auto remains unavailable. The WiFi hotspot and built-in navigation are optional and cost extra. Audiophiles can upgrade to a 10-speaker Bose or 12-speaker Burmester premium audio system.
2022 Porsche 718 vs. 2021 Porsche 718: what changed?
Setting aside the GT4, there is no significant difference between the base 2022 Porsche 718 and the 2021 Porsche 718, except for minuscule personalization options like paint color.
Price is the only major factor. The 2022 base model is at least $600 more expensive than the 2021 model.
The last big change to the Porsche 718 came in 2017 when the six-cylinder engines were swapped out for turbocharged flat-fours. While the new engine’s power is just fine, many enthusiasts were dismayed by the puny growl of the flat-four versus the throaty roar generated by the previous six-cylinder.
New GT4 RS
The RS weighs less, has bigger brakes, and has more rear camber. It also has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which comes standard. The GT4 RS is simply better tuned for racing than prior Porsche 718 models, which is how the RS earned its racing class designation.
You’ll have to pay a pretty penny to get your hands on the RS. But if you have $143,050 lying around and you want to buy a race car, then you could definitely do worse than the Porsche 718 GT4 RS.
Customized appearance
There are two new exterior paint colors available with the 2022 Porsche 718. Frozen Berry will cost you $650, and Shark Blue Metallic (from the family of unique colors) will cost you an additional $2,580.
Porsche is willing to cover pretty much anything with leather, so long as you can pay. New leather accessories like key pouches, floor mats, and owner’s manual covers are available with the 2022 718.
You can also get your key fob painted to color-match your exterior body color.

The base 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman starts at $61,850 MSRP, with pricing going all the way up to $143,050 for the top-tier GT4 RS Cayman.

Should you buy a 2022 Porsche 718?
Look, there’s a lot to love about the 2022 Porsche 718—but this model only gets really good if you upgrade to a higher trim level.
The four-cylinder engine is fine, but fine isn’t good enough for most Porsche aficionados. Instead, opt for the GTS 4.0, which is the most affordable among the 2022 718s that includes the naturally aspirated flat-six.
It may be worth waiting to buy a Porsche 718 in 2025 when the next big redesign hits the market. The fifth-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman will be

when they become available in 2025, according to the Porsche CEO. These electric Porsches will have a newly styled “electric front” similar to the Taycan and a brand new sports-car platform to help reduce weight. The 718 will also be the first all-wheel drive in its model. It remains to be seen if the 2025 Porsche 718’s range will compete with other EVs.
