Car and Driver rates the Mirage a dismal 2.5/10, citing a “severely underpowered 78-hp three-cylinder engine”, weak acceleration, and an interior made of cheap materials as reasons not to purchase this subcompact whip.
That said—it is a breeze to park!

The Mirage G4 is the sedan model of the Mirage. It scores just a bit higher with critics—Car and Driver rates it 3/10—but the car is plagued by the same problems. An underpowered engine, lackluster acceleration, and a cheap interior make this bargain-buy only attractive to the extremely frugal car buyer.
That said, like its Mirage sibling, the G4 gets stellar fuel economy (35 mpg city, 41 highway, and 37 mpg combined), is one of the most affordable cars on the market today, and comes with an excellent vehicle warranty.

We’ll start with the
Eclipse Cross
, which was redesigned for the 2022 model year. The Eclipse Cross has an athletic look, a revamped infotainment system, and a roomy cabin. Car and Driver rates it 6/10; however, customer reviews are often higher. Critics point to the Eclipse Cross’s disappointing fuel economy (26 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined—not bad but underwhelming for its competitive class), subpar handling, and lackluster interior stylings as reasons to opt for another, albeit a bit more expensive, SUV.

Finally, a compact Mitsubishi vehicle that’s endorsed by critics! Car and Driver rates the Outlander 8/10 and compliments its enjoyable handling, modern and elegant cabin (no cheap materials here!), and bold exterior styling.
The
Mitsubishi Outlander
shares a platform with the Nissan Rogue
and is slightly bigger than the Eclipse Cross. It offers three rows of seating, which is unusual for the compact crossover segment and has a generous maximum cargo hold.The downside? The Outlander’s engine and transmission are unimpressive and the SUV may as well not have the third row—the legroom is so piddly.
Highlights of the Outlander include:

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid ($36,995 MSRP)
The Mitsubishi Outlander—but make it a hybrid! We’re sorry to report that the Outlander hybrid doesn’t quite stand up to its gas-only brother.
With an MSRP of $10,000 more than the Outlander, the Outlander Plug-In is more cheaply made. Its interior, though well-appointed, features budget materials, and the vehicle creaks and rattles while operating.
Highlights of the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid include:

- No third row like original Outlander

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
is Mitsubishi’s smallest SUV. A subcompact SUV, the Outlander has a sporty design like the Outlander and the same fabulous warranty, but unfortunately, the similarities end here.Car and Driver rates the Outlander Sport a somber 4/10. Like many Mitsubishi vehicles, the Outlander suffers from an underwhelming engine and an interior cabin that looks and feels cheap.
