What qualifies as a junk car?

Cars can take on sentimental value over time—from road trips to driving to baseball practice to enjoying the freedom of the open road, our cars become tied up with our favorite memories. However, sooner or later, cars break down. How do you know that your beloved car is classified as “junk”?
Here’s a quick set of criteria you can use to determine if your vehicle is a junk car:
  • It doesn’t run
  • The resale value is below $500
  • It hasn’t been moved in a long time
  • The repairs it needs would cost more than the car’s value
Regardless of what a car looks like on the outside, if it no longer functions as a working vehicle, it might be time to say goodbye. And you know what that means—it’s time to find a buyer.

How to sell a junk car

It can be hard knowing where to begin once you decide to sell your junk car. Here’s an outline of steps you can take to make sure your experience is a positive one!
1. Find the car’s title and other documentation. A car’s certificate of title can help you get a better price for your junk car, and some buyers won’t buy the car without it. If you don’t know where your car’s title is, you may need to
replace the lost title
at the DMV.
2. Search for a reputable buyer. Salvage yards are a good place to start, as they specialize in junk car purchases and removals. Make sure that the company you go with is properly licensed and uses a certified scale. If you’d prefer to sell to an individual buyer, you can use Craigslist or another online platform to find interested parties.
3. Empty out the car and clean the interior. You don’t want to send off your junk car and then realize you left your favorite sweater in the trunk! Check the glove compartment, the center console, and other nooks and crannies while you clean to make sure you don’t leave personal items behind.
4. Take off the license plates and remove non-metal components (if required). In Oklahoma, you can transfer your plates to a new vehicle—however, you’ll have to inform your local DMV and update your registration within 30 days of doing so. Some salvage yards may require you to remove all non-metal parts of your car before they will accept it.
5. Take out any working parts. If you feel confident in your mechanic skills, you can take out functional elements of your vehicle to sell separately or transfer to a different vehicle.
6. Sign over the title. You’ll have to sign over the title or fill out some paperwork to prove that you have sold your junk car to a new owner.
7. Cancel your insurance. As soon as your junk car is out of your garage, cancel your insurance coverage so you don’t pay for something you no longer own. When you get a new vehicle, or even if you already own others,
