What qualifies as a junk car?

Qualifying a car as a junk car isn’t necessarily a cut-and-dry determination, so how do you know when your car is officially primed for the title?
While there’s no specific definition of what a “junk car” is, usually a car can be considered junk material if it:
  • Doesn’t run anymore
  • Requires major repairs that cost more than the vehicle’s value
  • Has a resale value of less than $500
  • Is parked in one place permanently
You might think the car looks like a hunk of junk, or maybe it looks like a few more miles to go. Whatever the case, if your car has become a financial burden or has lost all its purpose, then you might want to consider selling off your car to a junkyard.

How to sell a junk car

Selling your car without any guidance can be tough. Follow this handy checklist for how to start the process and give yourself the best shot at maximizing your profit.
1. Find any necessary car documents. In some cases, you won’t need a certificate of title to sell your car for scrap—but that isn’t always true. And supplying the car’s title will usually secure you a better price. If you’re struggling to locate it, you may need to go to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to
replace your lost title
2. Locate a reputable junkyard or individual buyer. Find salvage yards near you and make sure they are properly licensed and use a certified scale. If you’re looking for an individual buyer, check Craigslist or newspaper listings.
3. Detail your car. Vacuum and wipe down surfaces inside your car, and check to make sure you’ve collected all your personal items. Don’t forget to check the glove box, trunk, and other storage compartments!
4. Remove the license plates. Indiana doesn’t require you to return your license plate to the BMV, so you can either keep your plate as a souvenir or transfer it to a new vehicle. Some salvage yards are also only interested in metal car parts, so prepare to (or have a mechanic) strip the car of seats, plastics, carpeting, and other non-metal materials.
5. Salvage any usable parts. If your vehicle has any still-functioning parts, like a transmission or alternator, you might be able to sell them to an interested party or use them in your next vehicle.
6. Complete the sale. To settle the transaction and get your money, sign and hand over the title to the new owner.
7. Cancel your insurance. Don’t forget to cancel your insurance! Whenever you're ready,
