The Model X
is the largest Tesla SUV on the market. It has a six-figure price tag, which it attempts to justify with a high-performance battery, rapid charging, and a slew of high-tech features. One might imagine that a six-figure Tesla SUV is more of a space shuttle than an automobile, and you do get that feeling looking at the big Model X. With a sleek, curvy exterior and a stark, futuristic interior, the Model X feels like it belongs more in a Star Wars movie than on America’s highways.

Meet the biggest Tesla SUV: the Model X
At 5,185 pounds and 198 inches long, the Model X is Tesla’s largest SUV. With a starting price of over $122,000, the Model X is also the most expensive Tesla.
The Model X comes standard with a driving range of 351 miles. Upgrading to the faster Plaid model lowers the Model X’s range to a still respectable 335 miles. Drivers can quickly recharge their Model X via one of Tesla’s Superchargers, located across the country, or at home with a 240V or 120V connection.
Typical of Tesla, the Model X’s interior looks like something out of a science fiction flick. It has a digital gauge display and a yoke-style steering controller instead of a steering wheel, which takes some getting used to and some drivers find frustrating.
The Model X has seamless glass running from its windshield up and over its roof for a nearly uninterrupted view of one’s surroundings. It also has three rows of seats and is capable of comfortably fitting up to seven passengers.
The Tesla brand is associated with the best in technology, and besides a lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto capability, the Model X delivers. The Model X comes with a huge touchscreen infotainment system with small displays for rear-seat riders.
Drivers have the option of adding Tesla’s semi-autonomous driving mode, which enables the Model X to pilot itself using multiple sensors and cameras. Tesla also offers a Summon feature, which retrieves the Model X from tight parking spots without the user needing to even enter the vehicle!
The Model X also has an impressive collection of safety features. All Model Xs come standard with automated emergency braking and lane departure warning. Drivers may also add adaptive cruise control.
Dimensions
So just how big is Tesla’s biggest SUV? Check out some key specs for the 2022 Model X:
Engine and performance
Large SUVs need powerful engines, and the 2022 Model X is no slouch. The Tesla Model X comes standard with two electric motors which combine for a total of 670 horsepower. All Model Xs also come standard with all-wheel drive.
Among similar-sized electric SUVs, the Model X boasts the highest EPA MPGe ratings. The Model X Long Range is rated at 109 MPGe city, 101 MPGe highway, and 105 MPGe combined.
Cargo and towing
People buy SUVs to haul people and cargo. If an SUV can’t carry the things you need, what’s the point in owning it? Let’s take a look at the Model X’s cargo space:
Front trunk: 6.5 cubic feet
Cargo volume behind first row, second row folded flat: 85.1 cubic feet
Cargo volume behind second row: 37.1 cubic feet
Maximum total cargo volume: 91.6 cubic feet
Tesla’s maximum total cargo volume specs assume there are only occupants in the driver’s and front passenger seats. With five passengers, the Tesla Model X’s available cargo space drops to 43.5 cubic feet. Large families gearing up for long road trips may find the Model X a bit tight.
Many people also purchase SUVs to tow campers, boats, and trailers. While not the mightiest tow-er, the Model X has a respectable towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. That’s enough capacity
to easily pull a 23-foot camper or a trailer containing four horses. Tesla Model X vs. the competition
The Tesla Model X has some impressive features. It also has an impressively high price tag that makes it completely out of the question for many buyers. Below is a comparison of the Tesla Model X and some of its more affordable competitors:
| | | | | | | Cargo volume w/seats down | |
---|
| | 670-horsepower twin electric motors | | | | | | |
| | 394-horsepower twin electric motors | | | | | | |
| | 355-horsepower twin electric motors | | | | | | |
| | 201-horsepower single electric motor | | | | | | |
As you can see, the Model X’s main advantages over its competitors are its power, and its extra seating and cargo capacities. The Model X also leads its class in engine efficiency. If you have a large family and the money to spend, the Model X is an excellent eco-friendly option. If not, there are still plenty of fine electric SUVs at more reasonable price points.
