Your W2, mortgage statement, and lease/rental agreement are examples of what can be used as proof of residency in Alaska.
If you’re trying to get your Alaska driver’s license or qualify for the Alaska Permanent Fund, you’ll first have to prove to state officials that you are a permanent and established resident of the Last Frontier. Keep in mind, though, that only certain personal documents can be used as proof of residency, and you’ll need to use something that verifies your current Alaska address.

If you’re trying to get your Alaska driver’s license or a state-approved REAL ID card, you’ll have to provide four different kinds of documents to establish your full candidacy:
Identity & Lawful Status (Primary Documents): Establishes identity and residential status (e.g. US passport, certified copy of US birth certificate, Certificate of US Citizenship OR Certificate of Naturalization, I-551 Resident Alien/Permanent Resident Card)
Social Security Number: Your complete SSN written on the application or verification of your ineligibility from the SSA dated within the last 90 days.
Residential Address: Proof of where you live (e.g. rental or lease agreement, employment documents, government-issued tax documents, etc.)
Name change: Ensures that the names on your various documents match. If not, must provide proof of name change (e.g. adoption documents, court certificate, marriage certificate, etc.)
You’ll have to provide one document from each group to get your driver’s license or REAL ID card.
To establish your residential address, the following documents can be used:
Alaska voter registration card
Alaska title and/or registration (issued at least 30 days prior to application)
Change of address confirmation from USPS
Tribal ID card for remote address within tribal area
Canceled check or bank statement
Legitimate lease or mortgage documents
Letter from employer, bank, utility, charitable organization, etc. on letterhead verifying applicant’s residential address
Any of these documents can be used as proof of Alaska residency for a driver’s license application, although other documents may be accepted at the DMV’s discretion. Keep in mind that all documents must be originals, not copies or reproductions. The requirements for a REAL ID card
are much the same, although the necessary documentation is a bit different. MORE: How to renew your driver’s license in Alaska
What documents do not qualify as proof of Alaska residency?
You can provide a pretty broad range of personal documents to establish proof of residency in Alaska, but you can’t just use anything with your name and address written on it. Case in point, the following documents are not valid proofs of residency in Alaska:
Military- or employer-provided housing
Employer-paid moving expenses
Federal programs (WIC, Food Stamps, Indian Health Care, Denali Food Services, etc.)
Letter from a friend/acquaintance testifying that you live in Alaska
What qualifies for proof of identity in Alaska?
Alaska categorizes documents that establish your legal name, date of birth, and lawful presence as primary documents. To get your driver’s license, you will have to bring one of the following with you:
An original or certified copy of a US birth certificate issued by Vital Statistics
A passport or passport card issued by the United States or a US Territory
A foreign passport with appropriate immigration status forms issued by the US Department of Homeland Security/US Citizenship and Immigration Service
A resident alien, temporary resident alien, or employment work authorization document issued by the US Department of Homeland Security/US Citizenship and Immigration Service
An Alaska instruction permit or Alaska State Identification card
Certificate of Citizenship, Naturalization, or Birth Abroad
Remember that if your legal name is different from what is printed on the primary document, you’ll have to bring documentation that legally proves your name change.
