Is the Toyota Celica Coming Back?

Brands like Ford and Acura have had great success recently bringing back cars that had been discontinued. Toyota could be looking to go in the same direction. Reports are claiming that the automaker plans to revive their own Celica, out of production since 2006.

background
What's old might just become new again.
The automobile industry isn't immune to
nostalgia
. With many drivers beginning to long for the past,
Toyota
is reportedly going to give drivers what they want—starting with a new version of a retired model.
Signs point to Toyota bringing the Celica back, and the car from the past will be a vehicle looking to the future if the reports are to be believed.
After a rendering of a new version of the Toyota Celica surfaced, people are saying it could be on its way back.

The Toyota Celica legacy

Western Slope Toyota
goes back in time to reflect on the history of the Celica. When the Celica was first produced in 1970, it was a hardtop coupe. In the second generation, though, Toyota introduced coupe and liftback versions of the car.
The first Celica convertible was introduced in 1984, and 1999 saw the introduction of the seventh-gen Celica, again a coupe, which would turn out to be the final generation for the model.
In 2004, Toyota announced that it would be halting production of the Celica due to low sales, and production stopped in 2006. The
Celica Supra
extends the Celica legacy, eventually being spun off into its own Toyota model that is still being produced today.

The Celica may come back as a hydrogen-powered vehicle

MotorBiscuit
reports that Toyota is working on a new type of combustion engine that is fueled by hydrogen. The hydrogen combustion engine is a modified version of a regular combustion engine, but it’s better for constant load use than traditional car engines.
This new hydrogen engine is expected to be what powers the rumored new Celica. A rendering of the modern Celica shows it being a two-door with a high belt line and low top that give it a sports car-type look. Toyota wants to sell 1 million vehicles with alternative power by 2030, so making a hydrogen-powered Celica will help the company achieve that goal.

Why are there rumors Toyota is bringing back the Celica?

It's been more than 15 years since Toyota last sold the Celica, so why are there now rumors that the model is coming back?
Toyota recently registered a
trademark
for Celica, which is usually an early step in the process of developing a new model for an automaker. The trademark, combined with the leaked rendering, is a pretty good sign that a new Celica could be on the horizon.
