WirelessCar, a Swedish developer of “connected car services,” announced an expansion of applications for the Android Automotive Operating System (Android Auto OS) this week at the Autotech: Detroit trade show.
WirelessCar says
the new applications will drastically reduce automakers’ expenses and development lead times for connected car services. The new apps are already being implemented by Polestar, the

Journey Log: tracking details about every ride

The company’s new Journey Log application mostly does as its name implies: It “collates and tracks details about each ride taken in a vehicle, securely storing the data in the WirelessCar cloud.”
This can help drivers track mileage and energy consumption, but it applies more to insurance companies, which can factor in ride information when
determining rates
, and companies that control fleets of vehicles, like rental car companies or shipping companies.
According to the announcement, “Fleet owners will be able to monitor the usage and availability of fleet vehicles in real-time and on a system level. For example, they’ll be able to get alerts based on the number of hours each vehicle is used or when it goes out of specified geographical boundaries.”

Advantages for automakers: more data, smoother integrations

“Automakers will be one of the big winners with WirelessCar’s next-generation technology,” said Niklas Florén, CEO of WirelessCar. “Car companies using WirelessCar’s applications will be able to analyze real-world vehicle data that will drive better decisions about features and engineering.”
Data collected in the WirelessCar cloud can be anonymized as well, giving automakers access to vehicle data without compromising privacy.
WirelessCar predicts that 70% of automakers will implement Android Auto OS in new models by 2025, an ambitious prediction given the popularity of Apple CarPlay, which also
just announced extensive updates
.
WirelessCar was founded in 1999 and has worked with companies like Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo,
BMW
,
Chrysler
,
Nissan
, and Volkswagen.
