If you’ve been keeping an eye on the midsize SUV
market, you know that things are getting heated. SUVs currently reign as the most popular style of car in the world, and competition among automakers to win over consumers is fierce. While the CX-9 has been a reliable standby from Mazda
since it first debuted, the Japanese automaker is upping the ante with the upcoming CX-90 and its slightly more compact counterpart the CX-70. Read on with the car ownership experts at Jerry
to learn why enthusiasts are so excited about this impending release from Mazda. Going upmarket to replace one of Mazda’s most beloved models
CX-9 set a new standard for comfort and style in the SUV segment, but the CX-90 intends to give Mazda a performance boost that is sure to turn heads.
According to Car and Driver,
not only will the CX-90 add a more premium offering to Mazda’s SUV lineup, the CX-90 comes with a turbocharged inline-six and three rows of roomy, luxurious seating. As the replacement for the CX-9, the CX-90 will have some stiff competition
, including the Ford Explorer, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade. However, if Mazda intends to go all-out on the technology and luxury features, the CX-90 could even steal sales away from the premium midsize SUV segment among the ranks of the BMW X5 and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport.
The CX-90 will debut an entirely new platform
There is no set release date for the CX-90, but when it launches it will be the first Mazda to incorporate the brand’s new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that will be augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system.
To increase its appeal even more, the CX-90 will also likely come with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant eventually. Mazda already has one PHEV in European markets with the CX-60 SUV, and the CX-90 could very well sport a version of the CX-60’s inline four-cylinder engine and 17.8-kWh battery pack.
All Mazda SUVs now come standard with all-wheel drive.
