In an increasingly competitive automotive market, many automakers are stepping up their game, and Mazda
is no exception. The Japanese brand is poised to debut two SUVs
by the end of the year, the CX-70 and the CX-90. Both models will be based on the Japanese-market CX-60. Read on with the car ownership experts at Jerry
to learn everything you need to know about this upcoming release from Mazda. Why Mazda is introducing a new SUV
Mazda’s current top-selling SUV is the CX-5, but the CX-9 was the one that started it all.
According to hotcars.com
, the CX-9 set a new standard for comfort and style in the SUV segment, but Mazda intends to give the CX-70 and CX-90 a competitive edge with a performance boost, unlike anything the brand has released yet. The CX-70 and CX-90 will also likely come with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant down the line, which Kelley Blue Book
estimates would probably offer around 30 miles of electric driving range. If SUVs want to remain popular amid high gas prices, making them as fuel efficient as possible will be essential to their success. Not only would a PHEV version of the CX-70 be great for anyone looking to drive something more eco-friendly, but it would also allow the model to compete with a wider range of rivals such as the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
What we know so far about the new CX-70
The CX-70 and the CX-90 will be sharing a platform, but the CX-70 is going to be the more affordable and compact of the two SUVs. Kelley Blue Book estimates that the CX-70 will have a starting price of around $33,000.
The two cars have a few other key differences as well. Where the CX-90 offers a third row of seating, the CX-70 will have more cargo room.
Both cars will be powered by a new inline-6 and will come standard with all-wheel drive. Mazda has made all-wheel drive a standard feature of all its SUVs sold in the U.S.
You can also expect a suite of sophisticated cabin technology and safety features, such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless device charging, and an onboard Wi-Fi hot spot.
