Nissan vs Toyota: Consumer Reports Says Nissan Takes the 'Under $25,000' Category

background
When it comes to the rivalry between
Nissan
and Toyota, the former rarely wins. Toyota is bigger, has a better reliability record, and generally builds higher-performing models than its fellow Japanese automaker.
But in the ‘under $25,000’ bracket,
Consumer Reports
(CR) says Nissan’s got Toyota beat. Both models from the price range on CR’s ‘Top Picks of 2022’ were from Nissan: the Sentra sedan and the Rogue Sport, a
compact SUV
.
Toyota also got some love from CR, managing to get three vehicles on the consumer watchdog’s top 10 list. But none of their most affordable models could outdo Nissan’s offerings.
Jerry
took a closer look at each brand’s lineups to learn more.

Nissan and Toyota models starting under $25,000, compared

Nissan and Toyota are both known for offering affordable new cars, but a look at their 2022 lineups might give you a hint as to why Nissan managed to grab the recommendations for the price range from CR.
Despite having a smaller lineup than Toyota, Nissan has more models in the under-$25,000 bracket. The Nissan Kicks and Versa share the same price range as the two vehicles highlighted by Consumer Reports.
Toyota, on the other hand, only offers two vehicles for less than $25,000, the Corolla and its crossover counterpart, the Corolla Cross. Both versions of the Corolla showed weaknesses in their designs and drivetrains, keeping them behind the Sentra and Rogue Sport in CR’s eyes.

Toyotas that made CR’s Top 10 list

Toyota might not have a vehicle worth recommending for less than $25,000, but CR chose three of the auto giant’s models for its list of the
best cars
of the year.
In fact, CR bent the rules of its own list, including the Toyota Prius and Prius Prime together for one spot on the list.
It’s easy to see why—the only thing separating the two vehicles is the
plug-in hybrid
powertrain in the Prime model that offers 25 miles of electric-only range.
The RAV4 Prime took Toyota’s other spot on the list. CR was impressed with the extra power, battery range, and cabin comfort than the SUV’s labelmate, the RAV4. The RAV4 Prime’s battery offers 42 gas-free miles, bumping its mpg to an astounding 72 overall.
