Car people love a good Easter egg. Subtle
Jeep does it best
with its little decals and gas cap art, but most people won’t say no to the obvious or self-referential either. One easy strategy for a brand to remind the public of its glorious past is to hearken to previous designs—especially if those designs include striking colors.
Here’s how
Audi
caused a stir with 25 limited edition Nogaro Blue 2021 RS6 Avants.

More than a station wagon

Though one particular paint chip is the focus of discussion here, it can’t be denied: the 2021 RS6 Avant looks good in any color. A sleek and stylish take on the family-friendly station wagon, the RS6 Avant is also wicked fast and powerful.
Powering up its twin-turbocharged 4L V-8 engine means taking responsibility for 591 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, reports
Car and Driver
. You can enjoy going from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, which is Ferrari/Lamborghini territory. Imagine the possibilities for that soccer tournament out in Bakersfield.
But the 2021 RS6 Avant is more than just a beautiful piece of equipment—it’s an invitation to drive down memory lane. And memory lane is vividly painted in Nogaro Blue.
Why did Audi release 25 limited edition versions of the RS6 Avant painted in this shade?

Nogaro blue: the color of nostalgia

In 1994, Audi teamed up with Porsche to produce a station wagon. It was only sold in Europe and its signature color was a vivid, fall-into-the-ocean blue called Nogaro, says
Road and Track
This collaboration between Audi and Porsche was called the RS2 Avant, and its speed, power, and gorgeous wrapping changed the course of Audi's history. The company would be known forever after as a maker of “fast Audi wagons,” reports Road and Track.
The RS2 Avant was considerably chunkier than its 2021 descendant, but what it may have lacked in the twenty-first-century aesthetic it made up for in Porsche-level performance.
Top Gear
cites its “stellar figures” for 1994: it could go 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds and happily accelerate to 163 mph.
And everyone agrees on one thing—it was an immediate Audi icon.
If you were lucky enough to live in Europe in the ‘90s, you were awash in Nogaro Blue Audi station wagon options. But US customers were not so lucky.
In the present day, Audi is atoning for its sin (and deploying a brilliant marketing strategy) by finally giving the Americans what they want: a fighting chance. The iconic Nogaro Blue RS Avant is officially on our side of the pond—but only if you’re quick on the draw.
For the 25 lucky US customers who got their hands on a limited edition Nogaro Blue 2021 RS6 Avant, let us know how you’re doing. We’re betting that the $137,845 sticker was worth it. After all, nostalgia is priceless.
