After many, many years of anticipation, it looks like Tesla
may actually deliver the much-anticipated Cybertruck
next year in 2023. The buzzed-about electric truck is most notable for its boxy, angular appearance that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. The news came at the inaugural celebration for the company’s new Austin, Texas headquarters known as the Cyber Rodeo—a combination grand opening, investor meeting, and rave.
First announced in 2019, Tesla had planned to deliver Cybertrucks to consumers in 2021, but repeated delays have left consumers questioning whether the fanciful new project from Tesla will ever reach production.
Tesla’s new Cybertruck prototype
The latest model of the Tesla Cybertruck remains true to the futuristic cyberpunk style with a few upgrades. The Cybertruck is Tesla’s first attempt at an all-electric pickup truck. It is built to haul and tow just like any other pickup, but it bears little resemblance to more traditional models like the Ford F-150 Lightning
. The Cybertruck doesn’t just look like something from outerspace—its also made from some of the same ultra-hard stainless steel used in Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s space exploration program, Space-X. The Cybertruck is also purported to have a range of 500 miles on a single charge, go from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds, and haul 14,000 lbs.
In addition to your standard side-view mirrors which are still required by law, the Cybertruck has two side-view cameras. The rear glass on the prototype also lowers, a feature not seen in previous versions of the Cybertruck.
Will the Tesla Cybertruck still sell?
According to Musk, there are still 3 million reservations for the Cybertruck on deck. Still, reservations aren’t sales, and at only $100 for a spot, it’s not a big commitment to back out of.
The latest announcement for a 2023 model is promising after Tesla recently removed all dates from its reservation site. As more and more competitors bring electric trucks to the market, a swift release could be essential to the Cybertruck’s success.
But Tesla is no stranger to delays, and continues to dominate the domestic electric car market. In the last quarter, more than 72% of all electric cars sold in the U.S. in were a Tesla, with the Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan coming in first and second place, respectively.
The popularity of its current models is part of what has slowed production of the Cybertruck, as Tesla scrambles to get enough microchips
