. He’s a regular at events like the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where his jokes about car people are certainly tongue-in-cheek. His own collection is worth about an estimated $150 million.
He even has his own television show, fittingly titled
. In this episode, we see Leno take a drive with Musk in Tesla’s electric take on a pickup, the Cybertruck.
This vehicle caused a frenzy on the internet when first introduced, and its futuristic design was divisive. It’s trapezoidal, boxy, and not at all like a traditional pickup. Musk said it best on Twitter: “Cybertruck looks like it was made by aliens from the future.”
In the video snippet from Jay Leno’s Garage, you can see Leno and Musk driving around in the silver tank, chatting about specs and possibilities. Musk notes that the truck is just a bit too big for a regular garage, so they’re working on sizing it down by 5%. He also points out that the Cybertruck is completely bulletproof. When Leno asks why that’s important, Musk responds, “do you want your truck to be bulletproof or not?”
They make their way toward the Boring Company tunnel, adjacent to a SpaceX parking garage. The Boring Company is another one of Musk’s projects, which aims to alleviate traffic by creating tunnel systems under cities. Leno navigates the Cybertruck gingerly toward a tunnel entrance, just barely fitting inside. Musk said that a Cybertruck has never traversed a Boring Company tunnel before.
They drive through the 1.5-mile tunnel, emerging from the other side onto a platform. You can see a pair of boots in the background, the footwear of an employee who punches some buttons that sends the platform skyward. Leno and Musk and the Cybetruck float through the darkness and then pop up on the surface.
The whole video screams futurism—the truck, the tunnel and elevator, and discussions of apocalypse-proofing. Unfortunately, it appears that the future for the Cybertruck isn’t so clear.
Its production date had been set for 2021, but COVID-related chip shortages have delayed the Cybertruck’s rollout. Those who had reserved their alien-made truck will have to wait a little longer, probably until late 2022, according to
