Despite a Poor Review from Consumer Reports, the 2022 Kia Sorento Is Keeping Up With the Telluride

The 2022 Kia Sorento scored an abysmal 46 from Consumer Reports. So why are so many Americans still buying it?

background
Kia
has a strong selection of SUVs. More than half of its 2022 lineup is, or at least is marketed as, a sports-utility vehicle of some kind.
Critical response to all these models has been mixed. While the three-row Telluride won unanimous praise, car writers had mixed reactions to smaller options like the
Kia Sorento
.
Consumer Reports
(CR) gave the midsized SUV a dismal score of 46.
That hasn’t stopped Americans from buying it, though.
Jerry
, your trusty car insurance super app, took a closer look at CR’s review of the Sorento and compared its sales to its larger sibling. The results might surprise you.

Consumer Reports loved the Telluride—the Sorento, not so much

Like every other car-themed publication, CR had nothing bad to say about the 2022
Kia Telluride
. From the easy-to-adjust second-row seats to the strong but silent V6 engine, the full-size SUV won points from every feature. It scored an impressive 97 from the magazine.
The Kia Sorento, on the other hand, did not impress CR. The review cited a stiff, jumpy ride, squishy third row, and poor predicted reliability rating as reasons for the SUV’s low score.
But other publications weren’t as tough on the Sorento. It scored an 8/5 out of 10 and won an Editor’s Choice Award from
Car and Driver
Edmunds
praised its “mix of quality, practicality and available performance,” and
Kelley Blue Book
described its new styling as “handsome.”
It’s safe to say that the jury is still out on whether the Sorento is a worthy member of the Kia family.

On the subject of the Sorento, Consumers don’t seem to agree with Consumer Reports

CR might not be a fan of the Sorento, but the low score it gave the SUV doesn’t seem to affect its sales. So far, over 48,500 of them have been sold to U.S. drivers, as per data from
GoodCarBadCar
That’s not quite as good as the Telluride, which has made a home of over 55,000 in American driveways this year, but it’s definitely not as far off as CR’s scores might suggest.
Interestingly, neither model is leading Kia’s U.S. sales. The
Sportage
, one of Kia’s compact SUVs, has scored over 64,300 American buyers this year, despite the mediocre grade of 72 it received from CR.
The worst-selling Kia of the year so far is the
Stinger
, the brand’s first foray into the world of sports sedans. As of mid-August, less than 6,000 of them have left U.S. dealerships.

Finding car insurance for a Kia Sorento

The Sorento’s smaller size compared to the Telluride might have you thinking that choosing it over its larger, more expensive sibling could help you save on coverage as well. But that’s not how it always works.
In fact, average
car insurance
rates for a base Sorento are about $400 more than they are for a base Telluride. That said, premiums are much more affected by factors like the state you live in and the provider you choose than the model you drive.
