Consumer Reports Only Knock on the 2022 Ram 1500 Isn’t Quite Fair

Most critics love the 2022 Ram 1500. Why was Consumer Reports so reluctant to give a top-tier grade?

background
Full-size
pickup trucks
are big. You’d think that was an unnecessary statement to make, but apparently the critics at Consumer Reports (CR) need to be reminded of this.
In its review of the 2022 Ram 1500, the magazine had mostly good things to say. The one thing that didn’t meet its standards? The height of the truck’s step-in.
Jerry

Consumer Reports’ underhanded praise for the 2022 Ram 1500

Depending on how you look at it,
CR
seems to love the new Ram 1500. The consumer watchdog awarded the pickup the highest rating in its segment this year, giving it the only road test score higher than 80 for a
full-size truck
.
But a closer look reveals a potential bias against big pickups. Despite its one, weak critique about the difficulty getting into the truck, the Ram 1500 only received an 83 out of 100, and its predicted reliability and owner satisfaction rating brought the truck’s overall score down to a tepid 75.
Here’s the thing: CR rates all vehicles using the same scale, so large trucks have an uphill battle to climb. A pickup like the Ram 1500 will always lose a few points for things like gas mileage, one area where any truck struggles.

Other opinions of the 2022 Ram 1500

Applause for the 2022 Ram 1500 was much more lavish from other publications. It scored a perfect 10 out of 10 and an “
Editor’s Choice
” stamp from Car and Driver. Kelley Blue Book gave it four-and-a-half stars out of five. MotorTrend rated it at 8.9 out of 10.
Criticisms were minimal across the board, and a look at the 1500 helps explain why. Four engine options allow the truck to suit nearly any pickup driver’s needs. A superb driving experience means you get all the torque and power you need without the bumpy ride.
Inside, Ram also offers enough options to make the truck feel truly customized to your needs.
Touchscreen
sizes range from seven to 12 inches, seats can come in vinyl, cloth, or leather, and it all comes in a spacious, remarkably quiet cabin.

What does the 2022 Ram 1500 cost to own?

The new Ram 1500 will probably impress most truck buyers, but one area it does not lead other full-size trucks in is affordability.
The base model might start just under $33,000, but even the most basic add-ons quickly bring it closer to $40,000, and choosing a fully loaded model can set you back six figures.
Ram 1500 car insurance
isn’t usually cheap either. Annual coverage averages at over $2,500 for the pickup. That said, you can find
