Despite the infinite permutations that are possible for naming a band or a car, overlaps do occur. The Lincolns
, Relient K, and REO Speedwagon can all thank the automotive world for their band name inspiration. The Cars even took the whole category. Here’s a bit about Chevelle, a metal band, and the Chevelle SS, a classic from Chevrolet
. Chevelle the band
Chevelle was founded in 1995 by two brothers and a friend. The friend was soon replaced by a third brother, reports Classic Rock History
, and Pete, Sam, and Joe Loeffler released their first album, “Point #1,” in 1999. The band went on to make nine studio albums and attract a loyal following. Loudwire
calls Chevelle’s sound “alt-metal,” and the preponderance of heavy bass and loud vocals corroborates this description. But as the story goes with so many rock bands, there was sometimes trouble in paradise.
By 2005, bassist Joe Loeffler had left his brothers behind, and an interview with Pete Loeffler paints a portrait of an unbridgeable rift: “We literally have not spoken to him since he said, ‘You're going to hear from my lawyer.’” The band’s replacement bassist, Dean Bernardini, remained a part of Chevelle through 2019.
Chevelle the car
A car did inspire the name of the band, says The News Wheel
, and a recent episode of Jay Leno’s Garage takes a closer look at the car in question. The subject of the episode is a pristine 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, recently purchased at an auction by comedian Gabriel Iglesias. Leno ribs Iglesias for buying the car before having it checked by a mechanic, and then does a little bit of that missing legwork for him.
Leno pops the hood and comments on the engine, which states in large letters that the Chevelle will do 325 hp. He notes that this was “a lot back in the day,” which is true—the 2023 Corvette will do about double that without trying. Still, it’s a powerful turbo-jet engine, and you can hear the purr when they start it up and take it on a ride.
Leno and Iglesias also take a look at the paperwork and determine that it cost $3,600 originally, and among the included features were power steering, a defroster, and an AM/FM radio. Perhaps the Chevelle’s new owner might want to upgrade his FM to a bluetooth-friendly radio so he can play Chevelle’s “Point #1” and achieve total harmony.
