In the world of shameless merchandising, automakers are no stranger to slapping their logos on any old thing—including Tesla
, enter Tesla tequila. The branded trinkets can run the gamut from the usual t-shirts and toys all the way to the less conventional branded items like burgers, pepper, mills, and Christmas ornaments.
Tesla is not immune to the allure of branded merchandise. But aside from clothes, toys, and belt buckles, one particular offering stands out: Tesla-branded tequila.
Why is Telsa selling tequila?
Not the best look, right? Tesla has stocked its online shop
with a limited edition Tesla tequila, which originally sold for $250 as reported by Gear Patrol
. The tequila, produced by Nosotros Tequila and fulfilled by Speakeasy Co., was reportedly an exclusive, small-batch premium 100% de agave tequila añejo made from "sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves."
As listed on Tesla's online shop, the Tesla tequila was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, resulting in a "light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish."
Though the tequila here probably isn't the main selling point. The lightning bolt-shaped bottle was hand-blown and engraved with its limited edition series number (of 420, hyuk hyuk) and came with matching glassware.
Not sold with practicality in mind, the bottle and glassware require polished metal stands to support them.
How do I get Tesla tequila?
You can't anymore—at least not in this form. Tesla raised the price of the limited production tequila to $420 before selling out.
But if you want a similar reposado tequila, you can go directly to the manufacturer. Nosotros Tequila
sells its Reposado tequila—also aged for 11 months in white oak barrels—for around $45 per bottle. This means Tesla's branding, a couple of months of additional aging, and a cool-yet-impractical bottle resulted in a $205 markup initially before increasing to $375.
How did it taste?
Hell if we know. For the exorbitant price, it was probably pretty "meh," according to Gear Patrol's unofficial liquor expert, who recommended spending that money on a better tequila like Fuenteseca
instead. But in reality, those who actually grabbed up the limited edition Tesla tequila probably didn't drink it much, as they're likely holding onto them to flip them for a profit later.
Exclusivity is just manufactured scarcity, so expect to see some of these Tesla tequila bottles (with or without their bougie boozy contents) listed on resale sites in the future.
Can I drink it in my Tesla?
Don't be stupid
. Never drink and drive, even if you’re using a semi-autonomous car. Why do automakers sell branded merchandise?
Why wouldn't they? Car brands usually have a pretty big following and capitalize on that by providing merchandise so they can visibly express their love and support for the brand.
Tesla' base of fanatics is no different despite what they might claim. With people that treat Tesla CEO Elon Musk's words as gospel—and who think he and the company can do no wrong—the money practically prints itself.
