Apple’s CarPlay
feature is one of the most recent perks or car technology
to grace modern dashboards. It’s an easy and visually appealing way to control your car’s audio, messaging, calls, and even navigation. But Apple isn’t done developing their CarPlay tech quite yet. They’ve announced a preview of an even more integrative Apple CarPlay, one that can control climate, display your speed, and more. Now, automakers may be even more focused on making sure that they have better CarPlay display capabilities than the other guy.

Teslarati
offers insights into the CarPlay preview that Apple gave in June of 2022. A full-frame photo of the new CarPlay dash shows an entirely different setup than drivers are probably used to seeing. The Apple widgets take the place of gauge clusters on the driver’s side. We even see an infotainment display that stretches across the top of the entire dash, with an enlarged center screen for music, messages, and more.
The Apple presenter is quoted by Teslarati as stating that the “next generation of CarPlay powers your entire instrument cluster.” Though the specifics are unknown, the presenter reveals that iPhones will be able to communicate with a “vehicle’s real-time systems in an on-device, privacy-friendly way, showing all of your driving information speed, RPMs, fuel level, temperature, and more.”
What are Apple’s plans for the future?
Obviously, carmakers could be concerned that Apple will take dominion over the interior of their vehicles, especially considering that the tech giant has made vocal their interests in producing EVs in the future. But for now, we simply have Apple’s presentation from June to go off of, which indicates that Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Polestar, and Honda will be some of the brands jostling for the chance to show off the next generation of Apple CarPlay features.
The National Automobile Dealers Association
points out the trend toward larger displays in cars. Mercedes recently unveiled a concept of the Vision EQXX electric sedan, with an insanely massive 47.5” display. Another standout from Ford was the Mach-E’s respectable 15.5” display. The movement toward TV-sized displays doesn’t seem to be stopping. But even if Mercedes, Ford, and other car companies compete against each other to create the most immersive interior, CarPlay still places Apple closer to the key vehicle systems they need to access to dominate the infotainment screen wars.
Will Apple ever make their own cars?
Reuters
has reported previously that Apple could step into the EV arena as soon as 2024 or 2025, but very little is known about what models they would sell, as well as trim options and powertrains. The Apple car, which is currently unnamed, is expected to have no pedals or brakes, and will likely have advanced self-driving features. Though Apple’s project was originally started in 2014, numerous setbacks and engineering obstacles have delayed its launch.
