The thrill of the 3-wheeler is coming to states soon, as the new 2023 Morgan Super 3 is expected to land on our shores in the third quarter of this year. As far as new cars
go, this is about as unique as you can get. The 3-wheel car is nothing new to Morgan, since the company launched in 1909 in England producing only 3-wheelers. But the Super 3 is an all-new model designed and built to meet U.S. safety and emissions standards
. All that may be attractive, but the real appeal of the Morgan Super 3 might just be that it’s so much fun to zip around in a 3-wheeler.
Morgan eyes the American market
Morgan understood that, to truly break out in the American market, it would have to meet strict emissions standards. According to MotorTrend
, this a bit of a tough task due to the type of motorcycle engine it had been using since re-introducing the 3 Wheeler in 2012. Instead, Morgan opted to build the Super 3 around the 1.5-liter, three-cylinder Dragon engine built by Ford, which is the same engine that drives the new Bronco Sport
, in a turbocharger version. The idea for a Ford engine certainly was not a stretch for Morgan, as it used a Ford side-valve engine in 3-wheelers from 1933 until they stopped production in 1952. Morgan paired the Ford engine with a Mazda five-speed manual transmission. While the drive train creates only 118 horsepower, at a lightweight 1,400 pounds, the Super 3 still will go 0-60 mph in under 7 seconds and reach a top speed of 130 mph.
What's different about the Morgan Super 3?
Meeting crash-test safety standards was another goal of the Super 3 engineers, so they've given the car a much stronger body than previous models. The structure begins with a super-formed aluminum monocoque, a first for Morgan. Super-formed aluminum shell pieces make up the body of the vehicle, providing greater strength with little weight gain.
The aluminum floor has been designed to accommodate future powertrain upgrades, including electric drive.
The "barge boards" along the side of the car enhance airflow for cooling the engine and aerodynamics, plus allowed Morgan to create a clip system for attaching waterproof luggage to the sides of the car, an issue when 3-wheel users opted for road trips as the car offers little storage room.
Speaking of waterproof, as the Super 3 has no top, the entire interior is waterproof, including the seats, which can be waterproof leather or a vegan technical fabric that is 100 percent waterproof and can be cleaned with bleach. The digital instruments are cast in aluminum pods and the gear shift can even stand the blast of a car wash.
The seats are fixed in place, something necessary to accommodate the weight balance in a 3-wheeler, so the steering wheel and pedals are adjustable.
The Super 3 coming to America
Morgan will launch production of the Super 3 in April in England and begin shipping to the United States sometime in the third quarter of 2022.
Morgan offers more than 200 options for customizing your Super 3, but the starting price will be around $70,000. Buyers can start building their Super 3 around one of three "character" themes: Contemporary, Classic, and Touring.
