background
Subaru
has a long history of receiving high safety ratings, and the 2022 Subaru Outback is continuing to carry on the legacy. It was recently lauded by the IIHS for being the sole vehicle of seven to receive their highest possible rating for a new set of brutal crash tests. While it’s a great PR win for Subaru, it’s even better for drivers to know that Subaru makes some seriously safe vehicles.

The IIHS’ side impact crash tests have been updated

Longview News-Journal
reports that the IIHS recently updated its side impact crash tests, and despite a tougher challenge, the
Subaru Outback
came out on top. The new impact test uses a 4,200-lb barrier (which is an additional 900 lbs compared to previous testing requirements), which is approximately the weight of the average SUV.
A vehicle is then hit by that barrier at a speed of 37 mph, 6 mph faster than previous requirements, in order to mimic an actual traffic accident.
The increase in the weight and speed of the barrier boosts the energy involved in the accident by 82%. The new test also uses dummy passengers resembling in height and weight a small woman and child.

Why is this recent crash test rating important to Subaru?

The other seven vehicles involved in the previous side impact crash tests all received a score of “Good”. However, the new tests are more intense and will soon be the new safety standard used for side impact testing by the IIHS.
With the new crash test parameters, the 2022 Subaru Outback was the only car to receive a score of “Good”. This score means that during the experimental crash, it is calculated that no part of a passenger’s head will collide with any part of the vehicle.

Subaru is considered one of the safest brands to drive

Over the past 10 years, Subaru has consistently been the most awarded brand, period. They’ve managed to tally up 63 Top Safety Pick+ awards, including taking home the price in 2022.
According to present requirements, in order to earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must receive  'Good' ratings in all six of the IIHS's crashworthiness evaluations.
This includes a 'Good' or 'Acceptable' headlight rating, and front crash prevention that earns an 'Advanced' or 'Superior' rating—in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. And the + badge is awarded by models that come exclusively with 'Good' or 'Acceptable' headlights.
