background
Hybrid and electric cars are still considered luxury vehicles by insurance companies and drivers alike, which can make them more expensive. Luckily, there’s a way to get around the expensive upfront cost of a new hybrid vehicle – buying used instead.
Consumer Reports
has compiled a list of the top used hybrids you can buy right now, and the 2012 Lexus RX made it for a variety of reasons. Here’s what you need to know about this used
Lexus
car.

What makes a Top Used Hybrid?

Before we jump into what makes the 2012 Lexus RX a great used hybrid car, it’s important to understand the criteria
Consumer Reports
has used to compile their list. One of the biggest things Consumer Reports looks for in a hybrid car is fuel economy.
The rating and review site recommends drivers get the most fuel-efficient car possible, and hybrid vehicles are normally a great way to do that – new or used.
On this particular list, Consumer Reports was looking for used hybrid cars, so they only considered fuel-efficient vehicles that were ten years old, or manufactured in 2012. Next, to find the best of the best fuel-efficient vehicles, Consumer Reports took to their surveys and data.
They looked through customer surveys to find the 2012 models most people said they would buy again, plus looked at their own data for things like reliability and durability.
Lastly, each vehicle selected was required to have earned a Green Choice designation from Consumer Reports. This badge of honor is given to vehicles that have the cleanest emissions and therefore are environmentally friendly.
Only the vehicles that met each of these criteria and performed the best in all categories were given a spot on the top used hybrid list.

Why did the Lexus RX make the list?

The 2012 Lexus RX made Consumer Reports list of top used hybrids for many reasons, but the highlights are the fuel economy, smooth ride, and reliability.
In fact, the
Lexus RX
was such a great used hybrid vehicle, it was the only vehicle on the list that isn’t manufactured by Toyota. Breaking the trend from a car brand that clearly knows what they’re doing when it comes to hybrid vehicles is no small feat.
Consumer Reports loved the 2012 Lexus RX for its comfortable, quiet cabin and its all-around smooth ride. Although this vehicle is ten years old, it still comes with a lot of safety features and technology perks.
Some highlights include front seats that are heated and cooled, as well as optional adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and seat belt tighteners that help protect the driver and passenger in the event of a crash.
The fuel economy is, of course, solid for a hybrid car of this size, coming in at an overall 20mpg. And, this car has a price range between $16,000 and $17,625, which really helps drivers save and be eco-friendly at the same time.
For all of these reasons, the Lexus RX was named a top, used hybrid.
