“Trees, when they become overgrown or diseased, can become a big problem for homeowners.
If the tree section fell within meters of your home due to wind, snow, hail, or ice but caused no damage to structures, it is not likely that the insurance company would pay anything, as there is no covered loss. If a tree were to be damaged in a lightning strike, removal of the tree may be covered under the homeowners policy.
Trees that are afflicted by age, disease, or lack of maintenance are almost always excluded from coverage. Some adjusters may even deny structural damage caused by a falling tree if it is determined that it was known that the tree is unhealthy and it was not taken care of prior to the loss.
It is best to review your policy documents and check with your agent to be sure, but the best thing to do in this case is to have the offending tree taken care of, even if it is not covered by the policy.
