Will modifications make my car insurance more expensive?
How will modifications affect my policy? I finally have my Mitsubishi Lancer up and running and now it's time to add some sick custom work. My GEICO agent said to let her know what modifications I intend on doing, but I don't want to have my policy canceled or have the rate too high.

“Any time you make changes or modifications to your vehicle, you will want to inform your insurance carrier.
Most of the time, modifications are not covered, but
GEICO
is one of the few carriers that will provide coverage for most customizations by adding an endorsement. Here are some examples of what can be covered:- Enhanced tires and rims
- Running boards
- Accent lights
- Dvd, speakers, and sound system
- Custom paint job
- Interior work
Some modifications will not be considered at all and can result in the policy being canceled. Any change that impacts the speed of the car is a red flag for street racing and not something carriers want to insure.
Be careful of modifications such as:
- Turbocharger or Supercharger
- Lower suspension
- NOS system
As long as you stay away from anything that would indicate street racing, your policy will not be canceled. The cost to insure modifications can vary and will depend on the cost of parts and labor.”
