I drive a 2013 Toyota Prius and just today, right as I was about to reach 300,000 miles, the odometer stopped counting at 299,999. Why won’t my Toyota Prius’ odometer track past 299,999?

This is actually a really good question and is the subject of some controversy with Toyota’s older model vehicles. Seeing as your

is roughly eleven years old, the odometer isn’t tracking past 299,999 miles because it was probably never meant to.

As far as we can figure,

didn’t expect or intend for the older model Prius’ to remain road-worthy for 300,000 miles, which is why the odometer stops counting at 299,999.

We know keeping track of your mileage is important. If you intend to keep driving your Prius, you have two choices. You can keep track of your mileage via your trip odometer or have a new, lower-mileage unit installed and keep counting from where your old one left off.
