That’s a doozy of a problem. As you said, it’s annoying. But it’s also dangerous! Let’s go over some reasons why your car won’t go into park, so you can get it fixed.
When you can’t get your car into park, it’s usually because of an issue with the shifter cable, ignition, or shifter mechanism.
The shifter cable links the shifter handle to the transmission—typically, automatic cars have one cable, and manual cars have two.
When there is a problem with this system, it can happen for several reasons:
- Transmission shift cable is broken or stretched
- Shifter mechanism is blocked or faulty
- Ignition key cylinder is worn out
- Transmission solenoids are going bad (solenoids are devices made of coiled wire)
- Transmission is failing
All of these issues are pretty complicated and typically beyond the capabilities of the average car owner. The best bet is to take your car to a
