My 2007 BMW 328i has recently started ticking after the engine is turned on and it sounds like it is coming from somewhere under the hood. I’m not very car-savvy but this seems like something I should be concerned about—why is my 2007 BMW 328i making a ticking noise?

A ticking noise coming from underneath the hood is a fairly common problem for the 2007 BMW 328i and is usually caused by one of the following:
  • Low engine oil
  • An exhaust manifold leak
  • Bad oil pump
  • Loose valve lifter
In the best case scenario, all you’re dealing with is low engine oil—to find out, simply use a dipstick to check the oil level and add a quart if necessary.
If your oil level is fine and the ticking persists, you’ll want to visit a mechanic and have them diagnose the issue for you, as the problem is likely something more serious.
