Why is car insurance more expensive in a city?

I live in New York City and I pay four times as much as my friend who lives upstate. Why?

Car insurance
in a city is more expensive due to the amount of risk that exists.
More populated areas have a higher potential for damage and accidents to occur. Theft, vandalism, and crime are also more likely to happen in a city than in a small, rural town.
To offset the potential for claims, car insurance companies have to charge more for insurance. If they don’t, they may not be able to pay for the claims their policyholders submit.
Since car insurance is paid out of a premium pool, policyholders have to pay enough to cover each other’s claims. In a city, you’re going to have to pay more to ensure the pool is big enough to cover each driver.
But even if you live in a city, you shouldn’t be reserved to paying too much for car insurance. Using the
Jerry
app, you can compare rates for the coverage you want, whether you live in New York, Los Angeles, or somewhere in between.”
