Why does my 2002 Ford Explorer dome light stay on?
The dome light in my vehicle won’t go out and it’s draining my battery. For the life of me, I can’t figure out what the issue is. Why is my 2002 Ford Explorer dome light staying on?

Oh, boy, that’s annoying! If your 2002 Ford Explorer dome light is staying on, there could be a few reasons why.
First, check to make sure that the dome light was not turned on manually. The dome light switch can be easy to forget about and easy to accidentally turn on.
If the dome light hasn’t been turned on, then it’s probably one of the following issues:
- Loose door. If the door doesn’t rest properly in the door jamb, the latch may not detect that your door is closing. Make sure your door closes snugly and is flush with the vehicle when closed.
- Faulty door jamb switch. If your door is closing properly, your door jamb switch might not be communicating with your vehicle. If this is the case, you’ll need to replace the switch.
- Broken wiring. Your problem could also be bad wiring, like a broken ground wire in the door’s wiring harness.
Unless you are electrically inclined, we’d suggest taking your Explorer to your local Ford dealership or a trusted mechanic to have these issues properly diagnosed and repaired.
