Why do I have such a high deductible?

I am looking at my insurance policy, and it says my comprehensive and collision deductibles are $1,000. That is too high; I can't pay that much! Why can't it be lower?

“Don’t worry, you can pick whatever deductible you are comfortable having!
The deductible is the amount you agree to pay to fix your car in the event of a claim. The lower the deductible is, the higher the cost of the coverage.
You might have chosen a higher deductible at the start of the policy to save money. The good news is the older your car gets, the lower the premium for collision and comprehensive coverage.
You may want to think about having a lower ($250 or $500)
comprehensive coverage
deductible. Comprehensive coverage, in general, is much less expensive than
collision coverage
, and it is the more common and frequently filed type of claim.
The limits do not have to match, so you can keep the collision deductible at $1,000 to keep the cost-saving benefits. “
