Why did my car lock up while I was driving?

I was picking my kids up from school yesterday, and my steering wheel suddenly locked up while I was driving. Thankfully, I was able to steer again once I turned the car off and on again. Why did my steering wheel lock up in the first place?

That’s so unsettling! I’m glad you were able to get your [wheel back on track](

.
Your car may have locked up while driving for a few reasons:
  • Accidental activated of the ignition lock
  • Faulty steering column or arms
  • Low amount of power steering fluid
  • Broken power steering system
Depending on the root cause of your lock-up, your car could require minor repairs. Power steering fluid is key to keeping your wheel well-oiled and operating properly, so it may be wise to start there.
Aside from that, make an appointment with a mechanic when you’re able. Losing the ability to steer while driving is extremely dangerous, and a mechanic will be best able to diagnose and remedy the issue.
