Why did my car insurance go up with State Farm?

I just saw that my car insurance rates increased unexpectedly, and I was hoping you could tell me what happened. Why did my car insurance go up with State Farm? And is there anything I can do about it?

rates went up with State Farm. Unexpected price hikes are something no one ever wants to see!
It’s almost impossible to really explain all of the math and data insurance providers use when calculating rates. But there are definitely some common causes for those rate hikes. Here’s a list of the most frequent issues that result in a price surge. Do any of these apply to you?
  • Being involved in an at-fault car accident, or multiple accidents in a short period regardless of who was at fault
  • Getting traffic tickets for offenses an insurance provider might deem risky or reckless, like speeding tickets or getting a DWI or DUI
  • Negative changes to your credit score will usually affect your insurance rates too, unless you live in one of the states where it’s illegal to to consider someone’s
    credit score
when calculating their car insurance rates (California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, or Michigan)
  • Making insurance payments late, getting payments deferred, or having a lapse in your coverage
  • Rates increase as you get older, too. You’ll see rates begin to creep upward in your 50s, and more significantly in your 60s. At 70, your insurance rates will increase more drastically
  • Some insurance providers use telematic devices to monitor your driving behavior. If you exceed your estimated mileage, they can increase your rates to ensure you’re charged accordingly
  • If there’s an increase in your local area of car accidents, car thefts, serious weather events, etc., those factors can affect the math insurance providers use to calculate rates
