Before we begin, congrats on your soon-to-be new car! We wanted to say that before we delivered what is most likely bad news: front tires wearing on the inside is almost always an indicator of suspension issues. Some of the usual suspects include:
Incorrect toe or camber angles
Toe describes the angle of the wheels pointing inward or outward if you were looking down at them. Camber denotes how much tires “lean” when you’re looking at them from the back. If either of these is off, you’ll need an alignment. It’s strongly recommended you get an alignment with every other oil change.
Failing suspension components
If elements of your front suspension are giving up the ghost, your tires will end up working harder than they’re supposed to, causing this inside wear. This sort of irregular tire wear is often associated with failing ball joints, control arm bushings, tie rods, shocks, and struts.
Improper tire inflation
If your tires are under-inflated or over-inflated, you might see your front tires wearing on the inside faster than the outside. This isn’t often the cause of these fading tread issues, but it has been known to happen.
In any of these cases, you’ll want to take your car to a mechanic as soon as you’re able, and have your tires replaced as well.
