Who owns Volvo?

I’ve been driving Volvo cars for over 20 years, but I never thought to check who owned the company. Who exactly is it that owns Volvo?

While I’d love to simply give you the name of the individual who owns Volvo, it’s not that simple. For starters, the Swedish luxury vehicle maker is owned by a Chinese company called Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group owns 82% of Volvo, which is the far and away majority of the company. That’s why you’ll hear it be referred to as Volvo’s parent company.
Many companies are publicly traded, making it quite difficult to determine who owns the company. That’s not the case for Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, however, which is privately owned by billionaire Li Shifu.
Since Volvo is a Swedish company owned by a Chinese company, its manufacturing plants are fittingly international. You can find plants in:
  • Sweden
  • China
  • Belgium
  • The United States
