Bentley has been owned by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen Group since 1998. In January 2022, Bentley was consolidated under VW’s premium brand, Audi.
Walter Owen Bentley—an English engineer—founded Bentley Motors Limited in 1919 in Cricklewood, North London. The British carmaker quickly became known for repeatedly winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an endurance-focused sports car race held each year in Le Mans, France.
Bentley has been connected to Rolls-Royce (another British luxury car manufacturer) over the years. Rolls-Royce purchased Bentley in 1931, and then Vickers—an engineering conglomerate—purchased Rolls-Royce in 1971. Vickers then sold Bentley to VW in 1998.
Today, Bentley’s headquarters are in Crewe, England, where most of the brand’s vehicles are assembled. A few are assembled at Volkswagen’s factory in Dresden, Germany, as well.
The current model line includes four vehicles: the Flying Spur, the Continental GT, the Bentayga, and the Mulsanne. All four are marketed worldwide, but China has been Bentley’s largest market since 2012.
