Who made the first viable commercial electric car?

I know there have been experiments in the world of electric cars, but I’m wondering which company actually figured out the secret recipe for building a successful prototype and then selling it at scale. Who made the first viable commercial electric car?

If we’re talking viable and commercial, then this rules out William Morrison’s iconic 1890
electric car
. Though viable, it wasn’t exactly commercial—at least, not in the Fordian, assembly line sense.
The first viable commercial electric car comes to us from General Motors, which released the EV1 in 1996. It was electric, it worked, and it was mass-produced. If that’s not commercial viability, we don’t know what is.
