Produced from 1978 to 2002 across three generations, the Mazda RX-7 was made at the Hiroshima Assembly plant in Hiroshima, Japan. Throughout its production period, the RX-7 was Mazda’s front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, rotary engine-powered sports car.
It was a game-changer in the sports car world, not only because it was powered by a rotary engine, but it was also lightweight, practical, and, more importantly, affordable.
The first generation RX-7 was a two-seater, 2-door hatchback coupé that featured a 12A carbureted rotary engine, with options for a 13B with electronic fuel injection in later years.
The second generation RX-7 came in a 2-seater coupé with a 2+2 option for some markets and a convertible body style. Under the hood was a 13B rotary engine, offered in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms.
The third and final generation RX-7 was offered a 2+2-seater coupé with a limited run of a 2-seaters and featured a sequentially turbocharged 13B REW engine.
