Where was the Ford Focus designed?

I always thought the Ford Focus was an American car, but I heard it was designed outside the US. Is this true?

The Ford Focus was designed almost entirely in Europe by Ford’s German and British design teams. The goal was to design a vehicle that could be sold globally since Ford has a foothold in numerous countries.
The Focus was first introduced in 1998 in Europe, selling 29,399 units. Production expanded the following year with the first American Focus rolling off the line in Michigan. Ford sold 55,896 Focuses in the US in 1999 and a whopping 286,166 the following year. American sales stayed in the 150K–250K range until 2018. When 2019 saw a significant drop in sales, Ford announced that it would be discontinuing the model in the US.
Despite being an economy car,
car insurance
for the Ford Focus tends to be fairly expensive. Compact cars are often more expensive to insure because they are more likely to be totaled in a crash due to their diminutive size. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a decent deal—just use the
