The first Bugatti was made in Molsheim, Alsace, France, in 1909—although this factoid has a bit of debate surrounding it.
Technically speaking, founder Ettore Bugatti produced the 1901 Type 2 with two brothers from France while living in Milan, Italy. But eventually, he sold the rights to a Dutch manufacturer. He also designed the Type 5 in 1905 for the same Dutch company.
In 1909, with the backing of an investor, Ettore Bugatti purchased an abandoned Molsheim dyeworks factory to begin building his own brand. Fitted with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, the Bugatti Type 10 was officially the first car to be produced in Molsheim—where Bugattis are made to this day.
