Where should I look when driving a car?
I’m trying to make myself a better driver after getting in an accident about a month ago. While I feel better about turning, braking, and accelerating, I’m still not 100% sure where to look when I’m behind the wheel. Where should I look while I’m driving my car?

Knowing where to focus when you’re driving is essential to becoming a
safe driver
and avoiding an accident. Here’s where to look when driving a car:
- Look straight ahead and never down.
- Use your peripheral vision to scan on each side of your car, ideally up to 180 degrees.
- Check your blind spots if you’re executing a lane change or turning.
- Check your side mirrors and rearview mirror once every five to seven seconds.
- Look ahead about 15 to 20 seconds in the city and up to 30 seconds to scan for emergency vehicles, debris in the road, and other hazards or obstacles.
- Keep your eyes moving so you’re always looking for other motorists or obstacles.
