Where should I look when driving?
When I’m driving, I usually only look ahead of me and at the speedometer. My friend told me that this makes me a dangerous driver, but I’m not sure how I can improve. Where are you supposed to look when you’re driving?

Your friend was probably trying to be helpful and not hurtful, even if it didn’t come across that way. There are specific places you should look when driving—above and beyond looking straight ahead or at your speedometer.
- Scan ahead 15 to 20 seconds in all directions out of your windshield. This can help you identify potential hazards coming up.
- Use your peripheral vision to see if any motorists are alongside you when you want to change lanes or make a turn.
- Glance in your rearview mirror and side mirrors about once every five to seven seconds. This can help you see speeding cars, motorists failing to brake, and other issues.
- Keep your eyes moving. Don’t just focus on one area. Instead, look ahead, then in your mirrors, then in your periphery, and repeat.
- Don’t look down when you’re driving. Sure, you should glance at your speedometer every once in a while, but don’t make it a focal point.
