Don’t worry if you aren’t feeling the whole driving thing after 5 lessons—at this point, you should know how to use the car’s controls, steer, merge onto the highway, signal, brake, perform a three-point turn, parallel park, and perform an emergency stop.
At this point in your driving lessons, you should be comfortable in the driver’s seat and know where controls are located, from the turn signal, gearshift, windshield wipers, and headlight switch to the steering wheel.
If you’ve had some highway driving experience (and no worries if you haven’t), you should feel comfortable speeding up and merging while going with the flow and the speed of traffic. Hopefully, you’re remembering to signal before you switch lanes to let other drivers know your intentions. You should also be comfortable smoothly braking and coming to a full stop when approaching stop signs, red lights, and any other situation where you’re required to stop.
Sometimes, you’ll find yourself in a situation where you need to turn around in a tight space, and mastering the three-point turn is how you’ll do it. Parallel parking skills will come in very handy when you’re trying to park on a busy street. And in some cases, you’ll have to make an emergency stop—make sure you are prepared to stop quickly and to evade any obstacles, people, or vehicles in your path.
At the end of the day, everyone progresses at a different pace—if you aren’t yet comfortable with all these skills, you can still practice! Take your time, learn at your own pace, and above all, respect the rules of the road and be safe!
